SchoolCenter Picture  DON'T TAKE A BREAK
 FROM READING!!!

Fluency is defined as being "capable of moving with ease and grace, effortlessly smooth and rapid." When a student can read with fluency, everything else falls into place and they are able to read much more quickly and easily.  When fluency is achieved, the reader has the talent to recognize words routinely and understand written text quicker.  Their reading sounds much the same as a conversation.

There are three very significant skills needed to become a fluent reader: the ability to read faster, the ability to read smoother, and the ability to read more emotionally, or with expression.  Repeated reading is a great way for students to work on their reading fluency.  Rereading texts allows students to learn to read more words per minute.

The more students read, the more their reading skills will advance. The more their skills advance, the better they can read all the books that they need to read and that they desire to read.

SOOOOOO.......please, do not take a break from reading during the holidays.  Encourage your child to take a look at their vocabulary words, sight words,or "popcorn" words during the holdiay break.  Encourage them to read a book, or even christmas cards, and repeat the reading for fluency practice.  It will make a difference in their ability to be prepared when the holiday ends!
