Coordinated School Health Newsletter

Welcome!!!

April and May 2013

Let's be honest, helpful and trustworthy to our fellowman. Looking at what our world has endured for the past month and not knowing what's to come, we must stay strong and stand for what's  right. We are Blessed, and we Live in the USA!!!

We are Thankful  for our Blessings

Well our time at school is rapidly winding down. Most everyone is trying to prepare for test of one kind or another, and we're all getting spring fever. Just hold on and it won't be anytime until most everyone will be out of school for a beautiful summer.

Just to let you know, this will be our last newsletter for this year, so read and catch up on what you need to be aware of  for the month of April and May.

Healthy Happenings

Spring is finally here, and we are all ready to being outside either working in our yards, getting a tan or even exercising so we can fit into that new swim suit we bought back when we were going to loose some weight. This is a good time to do some of these things. Here are a few quick tips on how we can see results when we make the effort for the cause.

Eat Right

One of the best tips given to any dieter is to eat well, from the beginning. This includes significantly increasing your raw fruit and vegetables.  Your diet should be 80% alkaline foods (fruits, vegetables) and 20% acidic foods (meat, dairy, starches), meaning your diet should consist of much more fruits and vegetables than meat.  By removing most of the dairy and starches in your diet or replacing them with low-fat, low-calorie alternatives, you will reduce your caloric intake. Reducing your daily caloric intake will mean your body is in caloric deficit and begin to burn stored fat to keep up.

Exercise

Exercising for 20 to 30 minutes before each meal will help stimulate your metabolism, so that it burns calories and works more efficiently throughout the day. If you work out three times a day, your body will burn fats and unnecessary calories throughout the day, even when you sleep, so that it is constantly burning fat. If you can't fit exercise in three times a day, you can work out for 30-45 minutes a day, preferably first thing in the morning, so your metabolism is kicked into high gear for the rest of the day.Just jogging or walking and maybe even swimming will suffice. The point is you need to get active to burn the fuel reserves.   UT Extension

HEALTHY SUGGESTION

Grow your own vegetables, you can save on your grocery bill, eat healthy and entice children to know and get interested in where their food comes from as well as joining you in healthy eating.  You may want to review UT Extensions' Growing Vegetables in Your Home Garden before heading out to the local garden stores.

  Kids in the Kitchen

Parents and children were invited Saturday, April 20, 2013 to

Selmer Elementary School Cafeteria

They made foods for tasting and did several fun, kid friendly and healthy recipes that you and your child  could prepare. There were shopping tips, nutrition information and ready to use recipes. Activities  included a kids workout, games and story time. There was tasty, fun healthy snacks for children to prepare.

This activity was sponsored by:  UT Ag. Extension, Coordinated School Health, McNairy County Health Department and United Healthcare

A few tips for grocery shopping with children;

1. Discuss your rules before you enter a store, such as "Remember to stay close to me."

2. Bring a nutritious snack for him to eat during the shopping trip in case he gets hungry.

3. Bring a favorite blanket, toy or book from home, depending size and age.

4. Give your child a job, such as to help pick four apples or the cheapest green beans.

5. Have a plan in case you get seperataed. For instance, if we get seperated, go to the lobster tank.

6. Keep your child close.  Hold hands or left him help push the cart.

7. Plan shopping trips when children are not tired or hungry. Go when you both are rested like in the a.m. instead of after a tiring day.

8. Reinforce appropriate behavior. Encourage her to talk, watch, listen and think and play with her.

9. Make a game of shopping, like for instance, ask if she remembers the animal that bacon comes from. Find the peas in the red can.

10. Play "I see something" in the check out line. Let the kids guess during the wait.

These are a few ideas that will make your shopping experience a little easier to do, plus give you some quality time with your child. Penquis Abuse Council  Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426

   Column of Trustworthiness

   "Character Counts"

For the month of April our : "Character    Counts"  word is

Trustworthiness.

Trustworthiness.   Being Trustworthy means being honest, keeping promises and always telling the truth and being loyal so people can trust you. Trustworthy people don't lie, cheat or steal.  They have integrity and moral courage to do the right thing and to stand up for their beliefs even when it is difficult to do so.

Things A Parent Can Do To Promote Trustworthiness

1.  Teach children the importance of trustworthiness by word and example. Ask yourself "what kind of message am I sending?' Avoid dishonesty, especially in front of your child. Never ask your child to lie for you. ("Tell Grandma I'm in the shower.")

2.  Encourage honesty, even when it may cause your child to get into trouble. Praise efforts to be honest and point out good examples whenever you see them. Express disappointment for dishonesty.

3.  Keep your commitments, be on time and do what you say you will do, especially when your child is involved.

4.  Teach that,  people need the courage to say "no" when friends ask them to do something that seems wrong.  Explain that it is disloyal to ask a friend to be untrustworthy.

"If once you forfeit the confidence of your fellow citizens you can never
regain their respect and esteem."

   About Kick Butts Day

Kick Butts Day is a National Day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco.

April being Child Abuse Prevention month we wanted to share some infomation.

Every minute invested in a child's life is time well spent.   Nurturing, protecting, praising, listening.
Showing you care with a hug or smile.
Taking a moment to say "I love you.
Small things can make a big difference in the life of a child.

Week Of The Young Child April 14th - 20th 2013

One Slogan is There's No Excuse For Child Abuse!

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child abuse continues to be one of the greatest tragedies of our times. The improvements in reporting continue to increase our awareness of this fact. At the same time we know that child abuse can be prevented by communities that are committed to families and to the support and services they need to raise strong, healthy, and successful children.

Child Abuse Prevention Month is about connecting all of these things so that solutions to child abuse receive the attention that we need and that people expect. It is not enough to care about the problems of child abuse and neglect and to address the consequences, we also have to pay attention to the kinds of efforts that will prevent it from happening in the first place. It's a shared responsibility.

National Walking Day  April 3rd 2013

On this day, Americans are encouraged to lace up their shoes and take at least 30 minutes to get up and walk. It's a great way to raise awaraeness of the importance of physical activity and to give your family, friends and co-workers a friendly push toward a healthier life.

Adults are spending more time at work than ever before. The side effect is that, as a nation, we're becoming more inactive. the lack of physical activity doubles the risk of heart disease! There is a fix to the problem and today is a good day to start.  Walk for your health.

Tips for Students about Bullying

  • Talk openly and honestly with your parents and teachers about your mistreatment.
  • Keep in mind that no one deserves to be bullied. Bullies have a need to have power and control over others and desire to hurt people. Sometimes bullies also feel bad about themselves, but not always. Sometimes bullies are bullied at home by their parents and are determined not to be bullied at school - they would rather bully others.
  • Avoid the bully as much as possible. Give the bully space. When possible, don't go near the bully. For example, go down a different hallway, or when you are on the playground, stay away from the bully.
  • Practice not looking like an "easy" target. Look and walk with confidence. Bullies usually pick on people who are smaller and physically weaker or whom they feel will not retaliate. Bullies look for potential victims who look like easy targets: smaller, physically weaker, nicer, and more sensitive than the bully. So practice not being an easy target. Stand up straight, hold your head up straight, hold your shoulders back, look into the eyes of the bully (not at the ground or somewhere else), stay calm, and walk away with confidence.
  • Don't let those who bully you make you feel bad. When they say something bad about you, say something positive to yourself - reminding yourself of your positive characteristics.
