KINDERGARTEN EXPECTATIONS
Kindergarten students are introduced to the following academic skills in four content areas: LANGUAGE ARTS: -Recognizes and names letters of the alphabet -Identify beginning sound for each letter (ex. /m/ as in mouth) -Understand that a phoneme is one distinct sound -Identify rhyming and opposite words -Read high frequency words -Read 11 color words and 10 number words -Develop legible handwriting skills as evidenced by writeing first and last name, capital and small letters, and numerals to 20 -Attempt to spell simple words using pre-to-early phonetic knowledge, sounds of the alphabet, and knowledge of letter names -Develop comprehension and communication skills through: listening, following directions, predicting, retelling, identifying main ideas, and putting events in order MATH: -Recognize and reproduce 4 basic shapes -Recognize 11 basic colors -Count objects in a set -Count backwards from 10-1 -Count to 50 by ones and tens -Identify and name 5 coins and their values -Identify ordinal numbers to tenth (ex. first, second, third) -Sort objects by size, shape and color -Recognize and complete patterns -Arrange a four picture sequence -Develop basic understanding of addition and subtraction -Understand position words (ex. left, right, over, under) -Tell time by hour -Recognize calendar as a way to measure time -Recite days of the week in order SCIENCE: -Identify five senses -Idenitify daily weather conditions (rainy, hot, cold, windy) and associate clothing and activities to match weather -Identify and describe the four seasons SOCIAL STUDIES: -State personal information: first and last name, birthday, address and phone number -Know and develop rules of safety -Know and develop classroom rules to encourage fair treatment, cooperation, personal responsibility and self-control |
